Overcoming Resistance: How Not to Give Up on Your Business Ideas
Read time: Under 2 minutes
Are you holding yourself back?

I’ve been listening to a new podcast, the Creative Self-Publishing Podcast from the Alliance of Independent Authors.

In a recent episode, Orna Ross talked about the signs of publishing resistance, and it got me thinking about resistance in business.

Have you ever wanted to start something new, but it just never happened?

🚫 You told yourself you didn’t have the time.

🚫 Or you didn’t have the skills.

🚫 Or someone else had already done it better than you ever could.

These are all forms of resistance and block; things that can stop you from achieving your business goals.

Orna explains, “What underlies resistance always is some form of fear. It can be a fear of failing, it can be a fear of success, or it can just be a fear of the creative process itself, which is what we often call fear of change.”

So, how can we combat that fear, or as Orna suggests, how can we work with it and listen to what it’s trying to tell us?

Give these tips a try 👇
  • Acknowledge your fears – Identifying which fear is holding you back is a necessary first step in addressing resistance head-on.

  • Break goals into smaller steps – Often, resistance can come from goals feeling too big to achieve. Instead, breaking those big goals into smaller, actionable steps can make them feel more manageable and allow you to make progress. Celebrate each small victory to keep your momentum going.

  • Cut the crap of negative self-talk – It’s too easy to tell ourselves we’re not good enough to do something. Instead, remind yourself of your unique skills, experiences, and the value you bring to the table.

  • Be accountable – Find an accountability partner, group, or some other means of keeping you on track and working towards your goals. Having someone to share with can keep your momentum and motivation more focused.

  • Never stop learning – Embrace continuous learning by investing in yourself. Seek new resources, be it books, podcasts, conferences, or webinars, to help build your skills and expertise. The more you learn, the more confident you’ll be in your abilities.

  • Take the first step – It’s often the most difficult, but once you actually begin work on achieving a goal, it can quickly feel less daunting.

Remember, resistance and self-doubt can slow your progress, but they don't have to stop you altogether.

By implementing these 6 actionable tips, you can break free from the shackles of resistance, overcome blocks, and propel your business toward growth and success.

Kayleigh is quite simply one of the most efficient VAs I have ever worked with. Whatever I ask for is delivered without fuss, with appropriate reminders, and often with a good suggestion proffed too. She has brought clarity and consistency to some complex newsletter and events tasks I had been struggling with. She works very effectively with others too. I have reason to be grateful to Kayleigh every week and so happy she is part of our team.
