Whether you do it yourself or employ someone to do it for you building a website is time consuming and expensive.
Let's face it, you have to buy the domain (and any additional extensions), mailboxes, server space or hosting packages and stock images.
When it's finished you'll then need to spend time managing it or employ someone else to do so and you might even pay for advertising such as Google Adwords to help boost your search engine ranking. That's got to be it right? After all that time and expense it's got to work.... ...But what if it doesn't?
What happens if after your website is published nothing happens?
What I mean is this; if you've had the sense to install Google Analytics (and if not I strongly recommend that you do) then perhaps you're seeing a steady flow of visitors to your site but you're wondering why no one has contacted you and why people keep leaving on certain pages? Maybe you've noticed that you're not getting much traffic at all. The alarm bells will start to go off in your mind until you'll do anything at all to get people to your site and make them enquire. Then you'll go back to your site and take a look to see what's wrong but you either don't know what you're looking for or you're pretty pleased with the way that it looks and it does what you want it to. So you turn to the good old world wide web and that's exactly where they get you. What do you search for? Well, what do you need? You need someone to look at your website to tell you what's wrong with it and how to fix it so that people will interact with your website....does that sound about right? Yep - you search for 'Website Analysis' and this is what you get...
First, you'll see a bunch of "free" website analysis tools which either don't work or do require some form of payment.
Now don't get me wrong, there are some really good analytics tools out there:
and then of course you can use Google Analytics as I mentioned earlier. Both of these tools will give you a breakdown of the site's structure and internal workings for example you'll see feedback about the ; site load speed, use of flash, images using alt text, keywords and site-map (to name a few). Now, if you know what you're looking for and how to fix these errors then this will get you off to a good start as fixing the structural problems of your website is crucial before we move onto the next stage. However, if you don't know how to fix these issues or you simply can't do it yourself you'll look to a company that can do it for you. These companies will promise to take a look at your website, identify all of your problems and resolve them. It sounds great, but at what cost? Website analytics themselves can be expensive but then the work involved to make the changes and improvements can rack up a hefty bill. What are my options?
Over the past month we've had more and more requests from businesses looking for assistance in analysing their website's performance and overall usability.
